Avatar Resize

The avatar box cuts off your chin. The form says longest side 800. Crop, or shrink?

The profile circle slices your jaw, or a portal writes “longest side must not exceed 800.” You cannot tell whether they want a square face or a smaller pixel count. Cropping a landscape phone shot into a circle and shrinking a 4000-pixel original are two different jobs.

The avatar circle cuts off your chin. Or the backend writes longest side 800 and rejects a 4000-pixel phone shot. One refusal is framing. The other is pixel count. Mixing them up is why the face still looks cropped after you “resize.”

Three contrasts: crop or shrink, square or longest side, batch or one file

The portal rarely spells out all three. Line up what you just tried with what the field is actually checking, then resize.

What you are deciding Do the left first Do not start on the right
Crop the face, or shrink the pixels The preview chops the jaw, or they want a square avatar. Crop first so the chin stays inside the circle. Resize only changes how many pixels the file has. Typing 200×200 on a landscape shot and hoping the circle behaves. That shrinks the file. It does not grow a missing chin back.
A 1:1 square, or a longest-side cap The form says longest side 800, width 800, or max 1920. Keep the ratio and shrink the long edge. That is resize — not a crop. Forcing 800×800 because “avatars are square” when they only capped the long edge. You lose sky or shoes for no reason.
A whole folder, or one face at a time Open Resize Image. It can batch: drop many files, set longest side or exact pixels, download a zip. Treating it like crop. Crop Image is one photo — two heads almost never share a box. Keep each file at or under 20MB.

Resize can run as a batch. Crop is single-image. First check: a pixel cap, or just a square. Keep each file at or under 20MB.

One file or a folder: read the rule, then shrink

Open Resize on Image8K. Decode and export stay in this browser; the photo is never uploaded. Several files can share one pass — that is the point of this tool. Faces that still sit wrong in the circle need a crop first; do not batch that step.

  1. Drop the image — or several. JPG, PNG, WebP, or GIF, each at or under 20MB. If it is still iPhone .heic and the page will not open, follow the HEIC to JPG guide first, then come back.
  2. Read the field before you type numbers. “Avatar / 1:1 / square” means crop a square, then shrink if they also name pixels. “Longest side 800” means keep the ratio and set the long edge — do not force a square.
  3. Chin already gone in the preview? Lock 1:1 in Crop, move the whole box, export that one face. The walkthrough is the ID-photo crop guide. Then drop the square into Resize if they still cap 200×200 or 800 px.
  4. Only a pixel ceiling? Lock the ratio, fill the long edge (or the width they named), leave the other side on auto. Convert a leftover transparent PNG with the PNG to JPG guide if the form refuses the extension.
  5. Resize and download. One file goes straight to disk; many files can pack as a zip. Check the long edge in the preview before you send.

Resize locally — longest side or square

Pixels are right — what else can still block the upload

The backend still caps KB: follow the compress-to-target-KB guide after you shrink — do not crush a 4000-pixel original and hope the long edge also drops. They want a paper 1-inch face, not a web square: crop first with the ID-photo guide, then resize to the named pixels.

The shop actually wanted a white product plate, not a smaller bedroom wall: that walkthrough is the white-background guide — resize is the last mile, not the cutout.

Image8K resizes in the browser. Profile photos and form uploads stay on this device. There is no “upload first, shrink later.”

What “too large” usually misses

The circle cuts the chin: crop a square first. The form names longest side 800: keep the ratio and shrink — do not force 800×800. Resize can batch; crop cannot. Each file at or under 20MB. Image8K does it in the browser. Nothing is uploaded.

About resizing avatars

The avatar preview cuts off my chin. Should I crop or resize?

Crop first if the circle is eating the jaw. Resize only changes how many pixels the file has — it does not grow a missing chin back. Lock 1:1, move the whole box so the face sits in the middle, then shrink if the form still names a pixel cap.

The form says longest side 800. Do I force a square?

No. A longest-side rule is a pixel ceiling, not an avatar crop. Keep the original ratio and set the long edge to 800. Forcing 800×800 on a landscape shot just chops the sides. Use a square only when the field actually wants 1:1.

Can I resize many avatars at once?

Yes. Resize Image can batch: drop several files, set longest side or exact pixels, then download one by one or as a zip. Crop stays one face at a time — two heads almost never share a box. Keep each file at or under 20MB.

Are the originals uploaded to a server?

No. Image8K resizes in your browser. Profile photos stay on the device. There is no “upload first, shrink later.”
